ZEROING IN - STAGE TWO

SPECIFICS OF THE MDB HEALTH SECTOR

We can now look at the specifics of MDB Health Sector lending commitments, in the knowledge that the World Bank is by far the dominant lender in the sector.

In this instance, we can draw upon the features of a database assembled and copyrighted by Development Bank Associates (DBA) in 2004, the MDB Health Database or MHD, which includes 653 MDB health projects with a loan value of $37 billion, approved or planned from FY 1990 through 2008. In summary:

  • The projects are in over 130 developing countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, on all five continents.

  • They include 166 projects in Africa, 164 in Latin America, 124 in East Asia, 83 in Europe & Central Asia, 75 in South Asia, and 34 in the Middle East & North Africa.

  • The top recipients of MDB health operations, in terms of numbers of projects, are Indonesia, India, Viet Nam, Argentina, and Brazil. The numbers of projects per country range from one in Cape Verde or the Central African Republic to 24 in Indonesia and 23 in India.

  • The average size of health project loans or credits varies from $30 million in East Asia to $40 million in Africa and Europe and Central Asia, to $100 million in Latin America.

Hence we can see that MDB health lending is almost ubiquitous in developing country regions on all five continents.

MDB health commitments are huge, diverse and continuing. So how can we identify what they consist of, to see if there is any opportunity for us? Click here to go to Stage Three.
