WHERE THE MDBs LEND ![]()
The World Bank funds projects in all six regions - the above classification is that of the World Bank, while the regional MDBs finance projects in each of their areas. Hence in most developing countries, both the World Bank and the regional development bank have operations.
There is one area where three MDBs overlap – Central Asia, where the World Bank, EBRD, and Asian Development Bank all fund projects. The MDB regions are as follows:
AFRICA World Bank (Africa Regional Office – AFR, and part of the Middle East & North Africa Regional Office - MNA) and African Development Bank - Tunis
ASIA World Bank (East Asia & Pacific Regional Office – EAP, and South Asia Regional Office – SAR) and Asian Development Bank – Manila
EUROPE & CENTRAL ASIA World Bank (Europe & Central Asia Regional Office – ECA), European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) - London, and Asian Development Bank (East & Central Asia Department) – Manila
MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA World Bank (Middle East & North Africa Regional Office – MNA) and African Development Bank – Tunis
LATIN AMERICA World Bank (Latin American & Caribbean Regional Office – LAC) and Inter-American Development Bank – Washington DC.
